Space Science and Technology is an aspect where only a few developed countries have explored despite the numerous benefits associated with it.
The Centre for Space Science and Technology Education (CSSTE) has been at the fore front of popularising Space Science and Technology (SST) in this part of the world and as a way of stimulating Nigerians’ interest in becoming knowledgeable in space related matters, a space museum was conceived to further assist the teeming visitors to the Centre to grasp and understand the workings of so many space related things.
A museum is a place where resource materials are housed with the aim of educating people. The development of the CSSTE’s Space Science Museum started around September 2005 towards preparation for that year’s World Space Week, the idea behind this was to provide a first hand education, information and access for people to be able to see and appreciate space mock-ups and models of different types.
CSSTE’s Space Science Museum is located towards the entrance of the Centre’s premises, it has two wings. The first wing has so many mock-ups such as that of Nigeria-Sat1, the first earth observation satellite owned by Nigeria launched in the year 2003, Hubble Space Telescope, a satellite that gives us important information about the celestial bodies, Galileo Satellite, a navigation satellite, Telstar, the first communication satellite launched by the United States, other things in this wing of the museum are: the globe of the Earth, model of the Solar System consisting of the sun and the planets, Arian 5 rocket, mock-up of the ISRO GSLV-D2, an Indian rocket and so on.
The second wing of the museum has the mock-up of the beautifully designed United States Space Shuttle made with durable materials with perfect finishing, and the third wing has a mock up of the Apollo Command Module.
Students from primary schools, secondary schools, tertiary institutions and the general public have been coming for excursion to the museum, and they have always expressed their elation and admiration to the centre for having such an invaluable resource.
In furtherance of this course, the Centre is now constructing another museum which will be of international standard at her permanent site, hopefully, this will be a great resource centre for developing the minds of Nigerians especially the youths who are the leaders of tomorrow and hence become more space complaint and pick up careers in space science.
